Pentair IntelliTouch

Discontinued July 2023. What i9+3 means, the controller that thinks every system is one, and the upgrade kit that keeps the load center on your wall.

Discontinued. Replaced by the IntelliCenter Control System, or the IntelliCenter Upgrade Kit in the same load center. Everything on this page still applies to the units already installed.

A tall tan pool automation load center on a stucco wall, its door closed with a latch on the right side, gray conduit running down past a pump, with a filter and a heater beside it
Generated image, checked against Pentair’s own product photographs. It is not a photograph of this unit.

Pentair discontinued every IntelliTouch system on July 31, 2023, two months before the EasyTouch. It recommends the IntelliCenter in its place, and the IntelliTouch product page names a second route: the IntelliCenter Upgrade Kit, which goes into the load center you already have.

So this page is for owners. The questions are what you have, what still fits it, and what to do when it stops.

An IntelliTouch is three things

Pentair's brochure puts it plainly. A basic system is an enclosure at the pad, a personality kit that decides what it can control, and a controller.

The enclosure came four ways:

  • 521213 load center, with the IntelliChlor transformer
  • 521215 load center, without it
  • 521214 power center, with it
  • 521216 power center, without it

A load center has its own breaker subpanel and is 26 inches tall. A power center does not and is 20 inches tall, so it needs a subpanel beside it. Both hold five relays before the personality kit adds any.

The controller was an indoor wall panel (520138), a MobileTouch handheld (520906), or ScreenLogic on a computer or phone.

The personality kit is where the model name comes from, and it is the part worth understanding.

Reading i9+3

Pentair's user's guide answers this one in its FAQ. The number is the count of high-voltage circuits, filter pump included. The +3 is what the system can do without using one up: valve control, spillways, feature and macro circuits, and moving colors on the lights.

The letters after it:

  • No letter — pool and spa on shared equipment, with two valve actuators in the kit: i5+3, i7+3, i9+3
  • S — single body, pool only or spa only. No valve actuators in the kit, and HI-TEMP and LO-TEMP in place of pool and spa: i5+3S, i9+3S
  • D — dual equipment, a pool and spa each with its own filtration and its own temperature: i10+3D
  • X — an expansion kit in a second enclosure: i5X, i10X

The user's guide says the model ID is printed below the low-voltage circuit breakers. Read it before you order anything with a personality in its description, because the boards are not interchangeable.

Expansion is not on every system

An expansion kit adds five or ten auxiliary circuits in its own enclosure, and up to three can hang off one system. That takes an i9+3 to 38 auxiliary circuits, or an i10+3D to 40.

Which systems can take one is not settled across Pentair's own documents. The user's guide and the brochure's capability table both say the i9+3, i9+3S and i10+3D and nothing smaller. The load center installation guide lists all six base systems. Two against one, and the two go into more detail, but if you own an i5 or an i7 and want more circuits, ask Pentair before buying an expansion kit. The upgrade kit below may be the better spend anyway.

A replacement controller thinks you own an i9+3

This one catches people after a repair. Pentair's user's guide says accessory and replacement controllers leave the factory identified as an i9+3. Plug a new indoor panel or MobileTouch into anything else and it shows a mismatched personality screen. Press NEXT and it updates to match the system. It is not a fault.

Two more from the same troubleshooting section:

  • Do not use the service panel to carry a configuration between systems. It erases itself every time it loses power.
  • Check the COM wiring order at both ends before powering up. Pentair's words are that crossed wiring may permanently damage the system, and a board is the price of that mistake.

One parts sheet, two generations

The IntelliTouch replacement parts sheet has a section headed new replacement parts and an older one, and several parts appear in both:

  • Load center door — 520405, then 521227
  • High voltage cover — 520119Z, then 521051Z, and 521078Z for a power center
  • System transformer — 520342, then 521233
  • Outdoor control panel bezels — 520062, 520303, 520304 and 520302, then 521228 through 521231
  • Breaker base — 520281 at four or eight positions, then 521057Z
  • Wireless antenna — 520341 before the change date, 520217 after

Like the EasyTouch sheet, it never says when the change was.

Pentair does give a physical test, though, in a different place. Its current catalog sorts the upgrade kits by the cutout in the outdoor control panel's bezel: rectangular on load centers built from 2003 to 2012, square from 2012 to 2023. The kit manuals describe the same split by how the low-voltage breakers sit, in a horizontal row on the old ones and a square group on the new. Pentair does not say in so many words that the sheet's new parts are the square-cutout ones. Match the part in your hand before ordering.

What the breaker base is rated for depends on which sheet you read

Worth its own section, because it decides whether a replacement load center can take your breakers.

The IntelliTouch sheet calls 521057Z a 150 amp, 10 circuit breaker base. The EasyTouch sheet, published the same week in 2021, gives the same number as a 125 amp, 8 circuit load center. Both cannot be right.

The rest of Pentair's paperwork:

  • The current installation guide, which covers both systems, rates the load center at 150 amps
  • The IntelliTouch user's guide says 150 amps, holding up to eight 1-inch breakers
  • The older IntelliTouch load center guide rates its breaker base at 125 amps

So every document except the EasyTouch sheet puts the current base at 150 amps. The breaker count is 10 on one sheet and eight in the user's guide. If a replacement load center is on the table, read the rating label on the one you have and count the breakers in use before anyone orders.

The boards are running out

The transition notice closes with a list of IntelliTouch parts being discontinued. Along with the four enclosures and every personality kit, it names five replacement boards: the i10+3D (520077Z), the i9+3S (520078Z), the i10X (520079Z), the i5X (520080Z) and the i5+3S (520296Z).

The boards for the three shared-equipment systems, 520265, 520266 and 520267, are not on that list. They are still on the parts sheet. That is all either document says.

The same notice carries the commitment worth quoting back to a dealer. If replacement parts needed to fulfill warranty claims are unavailable, Pentair will provide the IntelliCenter Upgrade Kit for the EasyTouch, EasyTouch Lite and IntelliTouch. The warranty is one year and the system was discontinued in 2023, so few owners can still call on that promise. Past it, the upgrade kit is the same route at your own cost.

The upgrade kit keeps the load center

Pentair's catalog describes the kit as installing on the current wiring and housing: change the bezel, board and transformer. Every kit is a ten-circuit IntelliCenter, so an i5+3 comes out of it with room for more circuits than it had.

Rectangular cutout, 2003 to 2012:

  • 522045 — i10P, single body, for an S system
  • 522046 — i10PS, shared pool and spa, for the i5+3, i7+3 and i9+3
  • 523218 — i10D, dual equipment, for an i10+3D
  • 523530 — expansion, for an i5X or i10X

Square cutout, 2012 to 2023:

  • 522047 — i10P, single body
  • 522048 — i10PS, shared pool and spa
  • 523049 — i10D, dual equipment
  • 523529 — expansion

Pentair's 2023 transition notice prints the square-cutout dual kit as 522049. Its current catalog and the kit's own installation guide both say 523049, and so do we.

Three things to know before buying one:

  • Your old indoor panel and wireless remote stop working. The kit manual says so directly. The IntelliCenter indoor panel is 522035 and its wireless remote 522036, or you use the app.
  • The legacy kit's manual adds a condition: the system must be marked as UL listed.
  • It carries three years of warranty, where the IntelliTouch itself had one.

Or replace the lot. The IntelliCenter page covers the full systems, which Pentair cut to six part numbers in 2026.

Firmware stopped at 1.190

IntelliTouch firmware ended at 1.190, for both the indoor and outdoor panels, released on June 29, 2021. That is the same day as the last EasyTouch release. Anything wrong with it today is wrong for good.

One place this shows up: Pentair's manual for the IntelliFlo XF says an IntelliTouch on firmware 1.170 or earlier displays "VSF+SVRS" as that pump's type. You choose it anyway, and the pump still has no SVRS entrapment protection. If your pumps are newer than your firmware, check the version on the panel before trusting what it calls them.

Phone control is still ScreenLogic2

The ScreenLogic2 interface is still listed on Pentair's site, sold through dealers and not marked discontinued. The bundle is 522104, which is the protocol adapter (520500) and the wireless transceiver (522620). For a big property where the standard transceiver will not reach, 520639 is a high-powered link with two radios.

The automation guide covers what an IntelliCenter adds over this, and whether the difference is worth it on a pool that is otherwise working.

Which model do you have?

The model number is on the control system label. Everything else in the range is shared — these are the parts that change with it.

Pentair IntelliTouch parts, and what goes wrong

Read off the manufacturer’s parts list and checked before it ships. Open a row for what a bad one actually does — or start from the symptom and work down, which is the cheaper order.

What is it doing?

If you are doing the job anyway

Before ordering, find the model ID below the low-voltage breakers and look at the shape of the cutout around them. The first tells you which personality parts fit and the second which upgrade kit does.

The panel is dead

The 3 A breaker first, because it resets and costs least, then the transformer. The sheet lists two transformers either side of an undated change, so read the one in your load center before buying.

  • Circuit breaker, 3 A low voltage8520031Z
  • Load center system transformer, after the change date521233
  • 520342520342

One circuit will not switch

One dead auxiliary is a relay far more often than a board, and the heater has its own kit. Buying a board first is the expensive way to find that out.

  • Relay kit, three horsepower520106
  • Heater relay repair kitRLYHTR

Moving a shared-equipment system to IntelliCenter, square cutout

The upgrade kit replaces the bezel, boards and transformer in the load center you have. The old indoor panel stops working after it, so the IntelliCenter one is part of the job if you want a panel inside.

Pentair IntelliTouch warranty

1 year parts

One year, the term Pentair's warranty page gives all automation equipment. The upgrade kit that replaces the IntelliTouch's boards carries three. Pentair's automation transition notice says discontinued systems continue to be supported and that it will replace them under warranty with comparable equipment while parts are available. It then adds the part worth keeping: if the parts needed to fulfill a warranty claim are unavailable, Pentair will provide the IntelliCenter Upgrade Kit, which names the IntelliTouch alongside the EasyTouch.
