Pool Design, Landscaping & Backyard Ideas

The best-looking pools are not the most expensive ones. They are the ones where the shape, the deck and the planting were decided together instead of one at a time.

These guides cover layout, materials, lighting and planting with an eye on what each choice will cost you in maintenance later.

Common design & ideas questions

What is the best pool shape for a small backyard?

A simple rectangle almost always beats a freeform shape in a small yard. It uses the space efficiently, leaves usable deck on the long sides, costs less to cover, and reads as intentional. Plunge pools and 10x20 or 12x24 rectangles are the workhorses of tight lots.

What is the best decking material around a pool?

Travertine and shell-blend pavers stay coolest underfoot and grip well when wet. Broom-finished concrete is the value option. Composite decking and dark porcelain look excellent but get hot in direct sun, so check surface temperature before committing in a hot climate.

What should I plant near a pool?

Choose plants that do not shed constantly, do not have invasive roots and do not attract bees at the waterline. Ornamental grasses, agave, dwarf yaupon, olive and clumping bamboo all work well. Avoid bougainvillea, mulberry, pine and anything with fine litter near the skimmer side.
