Pentair IntelliConnect

Pentair's two-relay Wi-Fi controller for one body of water: what it runs, the pumps it can't, and why its freeze protection needs the internet.

The IntelliConnect is Pentair's smallest controller. It's a gray box with two relays, a Wi-Fi radio and a few low-voltage terminals, and it goes where the timer used to be. Pentair's automation replacement guide calls it an ideal replacement for a time clock on a single body of water, and that's a fair description of what it is.

What it runs

Two relays switch line-voltage equipment on and off. Pentair's catalog and sell sheet name single-speed pumps, including other brands, booster pumps, and pool, landscape and most color-changing lights. Each relay is rated 16 A. A pump on one can be up to 1 HP at 120 V or 2 HP at 240 V.

An RS-485 terminal talks to Pentair's IntelliFlo pumps and to IntelliChlor or iChlor salt systems. Both wire into the same terminal block.

A heater contact is a low-voltage dry contact for most gas heaters and heat pumps with 24 VAC controls.

Pentair says it controls up to five devices. That's two relays, a pump and a salt system on the RS-485 terminal, and a heater. The arithmetic is mine, but it's the only way the terminals add up to five.

What it doesn't have matters as much. The guide lists its terminals as two relays, RS-485, a heater contact and a water temperature sensor input. There's nothing for valve actuators, so it can't switch between a pool and a spa, which is why Pentair sells it for one body of water. Pentair's help page says the apps don't work with other smart home systems or voice assistants at this time. And the manual says not to use it for an automatic pool cover.

Pumps it can't run, and two it might

The installation guide names three pumps that won't work with it: the IntelliFlo VF (011012), the IntelliFlo VS (011013) and the IntelliPro VS (P6E6T4H-209L). If one of those is on your pad, this isn't your controller.

The IntelliFlo3 is less clear. Its own 2025 guide says every IntelliFlo3 and IntelliPro3 works with Pentair automation, and the IntelliConnect guide covers IntelliFlo pumps in general. Neither one names the other.

The SuperFlo VST and SuperMax VS are where Pentair disagrees with itself. Both pumps take RS-485 if they were built after 15 October 2020, through the 356324Z wiring kit.

  • The pumps' guide, 356292 Rev C, dated 31 July 2023, says IntelliConnect systems can't control the pump over RS-485, and have to use its digital inputs.
  • The IntelliConnect guide, 523338 Rev G, dated 22 August 2023, gives the steps to do exactly that. It says to make sure the IntelliConnect has the latest firmware, set the pump's address to 1, and set Speed 1 to 0 RPM for 24 hours. If the app doesn't list the pump by name, you pick "Pentair VS (RS485)."

The later document is the IntelliConnect's, and it ties the pairing to current firmware. That fits the idea that support came in an update after the pump guide was written. But it's a guess, and I haven't tested it. Pentair's 2024 automation replacement guide lists the SuperFlo VST "via RS485" without saying which controller it means. If this pairing is the reason you're buying, ask the dealer to confirm it before you pay.

The wiring rules that catch installers

These are all from Pentair's installation guide, and most of them explain a problem that looks like a fault.

  • Both legs of a load go through the relay. The board reads current on the relay, and it can't if one side comes straight from the breaker.
  • The filter pump relay has to see at least 100 watts before a salt system, heater, booster pump or other flow-dependent equipment will start.
  • A single-speed filter pump has to be named as one in the app, as "Single Speed Filter Pump," or the controller won't treat it as the filter pump.
  • IntelliFlo pumps, salt systems and heaters take constant power from the breaker, not from a relay. The IntelliConnect runs them over RS-485 or, for a heater, the dry contact.
  • A salt system or heater needs a filter pump connected, either a named single-speed pump or an IntelliFlo. The salt system won't make chlorine when that pump isn't running.
  • Flow-dependent relays wait two minutes after the filter pump starts, so the system has time to prime.
  • There's no GFCI inside. A pool light on a relay needs GFCI protection added in the field.
  • Use at least 14 AWG copper, rated 75°C. Mount it at eye level with the knockouts facing down, at least 5 feet from the water.

For a heater, you remove the factory jumper from the heater's external switch or fireman's switch terminal, and no other jumper. Set the heater's own thermostat to the highest temperature you'll want, because the app can't heat past it. A water temperature sensor goes between the filter pump and the filter. Pentair says it's sold separately, and none of its IntelliConnect documents gives a part number for it.

The heater also gets a cool-down. It shuts off five minutes before the filtration cycle ends. If you stop the pump while the heater is running, the heater stops and the pump keeps going for five more minutes.

Test the Wi-Fi before you mount it

It needs a 2.4 GHz network. Pentair's steps are to wire power in temporarily at the spot you've picked, pair it, and watch the LINK light. Solid green means it's connected. Blinking green means it's looking. Blinking red means pairing timed out, and a power cycle of 10 seconds restarts it.

The 2018 pairing guide says to fit a 2.4 GHz range extender if the app shows a signal between −75 and −95 dBm. Pair the IntelliConnect to the extender, not the router.

Current units come with an external antenna that screws on hand-tight on the left side. The guide says older models may not have one, so an antenna is a quick way to tell a newer unit. Pentair says it gives on average more than 4.9 times the reception distance of the original. The footnote says that figure comes from an Ericsson model for a city deployment with the unit 6 feet up, not from a test at a pool.

If the connection drops for more than 60 minutes, the app shows the system as offline. Pentair's help page says it reconnects on its own when the Wi-Fi comes back.

Freeze protection comes from the internet

This is the part to understand before you rely on it in a cold climate.

The IntelliConnect's freeze protection works from an internet weather service, updated hourly. Neither guide says it uses a sensor at the pad. A 2019 Pentair notice names AccuWeather and says the temperature comes from the zip code on your account. If the Wi-Fi, the internet or the weather service is down, freeze protection doesn't work, and Pentair says so plainly.

The same notice describes units that stopped updating the temperature, sometimes because the zip code was wrong. Its fix is to check the temperature shown in the app against the real one, and to check the zip code.

A few more rules from the guides:

  • It only works in Auto mode.
  • It can start a variable-speed pump that's been disabled in the app. If you winterize, cut the pump's power at the breaker.
  • A relay set up as a booster pump runs during freeze protection. One set up as Other (Flow Dependent) doesn't.

The automation guide explains why a freeze sensor should read the air at the pad, and why a controller should keep working when the internet doesn't. On this one, freeze protection is the part that needs the internet. Jandy's AquaLink TCX, sold for the same kind of pool, has its own air sensor instead.

The panel inside the lid

  • MODE cycles through Auto, Service and Timeout. In Service, the app can't control anything. Timeout locks the app out for three hours.
  • RELAY 1 and RELAY 2 turn their equipment on by hand. Depending on the software version, pressing one may put the unit into Service mode. Hold Relay 1 for three seconds to reset the unit.
  • Each relay LED shows green when it's on and red when it has found a fault.
  • In Service mode, holding both relay buttons for three seconds fires the heater.
  • To change the salt output by hand, put the unit in Service mode, wait three minutes, then adjust it at the cell. It runs at the new setting when you go back to Auto.

There's also a DEMAND RESPONSE light. It turns solid red when your electric utility has started a demand response event, if you've signed up with them. Pentair warns that the pump can then start, stop or change speed without warning. That's one more reason to switch it off at the breaker before you work on the pump.

Three apps in its life

The IntelliConnect has outlived two apps. The 2018 pairing guide and the 2019 freeze notice use Pentair Link2O. The 2021 user's guide and the 2023 installation guide use Pentair Home. The product page and the 2025-2026 catalog use the Pentair Pool app, with the Pentair Pro app for the service company. The IntelliCenter went through the same number of changes.

Pentair's help page covers two account limits. An account has one email address and password, so a household shares one login. And only one professional can monitor the system at a time.

The app also asks whether your unit's label says PIF or PNR, because there are both. The network name it broadcasts during pairing starts "IntelliConnectPIF" in the 2018 guide and "PNRA1PIF" in the 2023 one.

Two part numbers, and two sizes

523317 is the dealer and store version. EC-523317 is the online version, and its warranty is one year of parts only. The EC prefix works the same way it does on the SuperFlo.

Pentair also prints two sets of dimensions. The 2023 sell sheet and the 2024 replacement guide say 9½ in. high, 10¾ in. wide and 5¼ in. deep. The 2023 installation guide says 8⅛ in. high, 12⅛ in. wide and 5⅜ in. deep. If you're fitting it into a tight space, measure the box itself.

Parts

Pentair's installation guide lists one replacement part: the control board kit, 523327. The 2025-2026 catalog shows the IntelliConnect on page 18 and points to page 323 for its parts, but page 323 covers the IntelliCenter only. Anything else inside the box isn't listed as a part, and the temperature sensor has no part number in any IntelliConnect document.

Which model do you have?

The model number is on the control system label. Everything else in the range is shared — these are the parts that change with it.

Pentair IntelliConnect warranty

1 year parts, 1 year labor

Pentair's warranty page gives all automation equipment one year, parts and labor. Pentair requires professional installation for full coverage on everything outside a short list, and the IntelliConnect isn't on it. EC-523317, and anything bought online, gets one year of parts only. Bought on one invoice with a Pentair pump and filter from a store, builder or service company, it counts as the third item that extends all three to Pentair's three-year bundle warranty. Internet purchases don't qualify for the bundle.
