Pentair · WhisperFlo
Pentair WhisperFlo
The high-head pump in two generations — the WFE ladder people own, and the single DOE-compliant model that replaced all of it.

The WhisperFlo exists for one reason, and it is not the name. It is a high-head pump — built to hold its flow when the plumbing fights back.
That distinction matters more than horsepower, and it is the thing most people replacing one never get told.
What high head actually means
Every pump loses flow as resistance rises. A long run of pipe, a lot of elbows, a heater, an in-floor cleaning system, a solar array on the roof — each one adds head, and every pump has a curve showing how much flow survives it.
A medium-head pump like the Hayward Super Pump is perfectly good on a straightforward pool with short, fat plumbing. Put it against real resistance and its flow falls away quickly.
The WhisperFlo holds up better under that load, and above it sits the WhisperFloXF — the same idea on 2½ or 3 inch plumbing, now discontinued for residential sale but still made commercially. So the question is not "is this a better pump" — it is does your plumbing actually fight back. On a simple pool with 2-inch pipe and a short run, you are paying for a capability you never use.
Which model you have
The model is on the pump label as WFE- and a number, and that number decides three parts: the impeller, the motor, and — on the WFE-12 only — the diffuser.
The impeller is the one that catches people, because the WFE-2 and WFE-3 share a motor and take different impellers. Same horsepower on the label, different part in the box.
Everything else — housing, basket, lid, seals, drain plugs — is shared across the whole range. That is why buying "a WhisperFlo lid o-ring" is safe and buying "a WhisperFlo impeller" is not.
What you can actually buy is one pump
The section above describes the pump most people own. It does not describe the pump on sale, and the gap is wider than a model refresh.
The current WhisperFlo is a single part number, 015583. One pump, 1.1 total horsepower, where the WFE ladder ran from 0.75 up to 3 HP across six models.
Pentair is direct about why, on its own sell sheet: under new Department of Energy regulations, most single-speed pumps will fall out of compliance. The response was not to make the range comply — it was to keep one model and give it a better motor.
That motor is the interesting part. Pentair calls these the first and only single-speed pumps to use NEMA Premium Efficient motors for pool applications, with a footnote worth reading: "first single-speed, single-phase, permanent split capacitor motor." Bounded, but still a real claim — a premium-efficiency motor is not what single-speed pool pumps normally carry.
The rest of the current specification: 2 inch NPT suction and discharge, 115/208-230 VAC, a Cam and Ramp lid, and a TEFC motor.
The surviving WhisperFlo is not the pump the range was
Worth saying plainly, because the name has not changed and the positioning has.
This page opens by explaining high head, and that is what a WFE-8 or a WFE-12 was for — real resistance, long runs, solar on the roof, an in-floor system. Pentair now sells the WhisperFlo High Performance under a heading that reads "For smaller pools and pumped water features."
So if you have a genuinely high-head system and a dying WFE-12, replacing like for like is no longer an option in this family. The 3 HP single-speed WhisperFlo is gone, and what carries that name today is a 1.1 THP pump aimed at the opposite end of the market.
The replacement for a large WFE is the WhisperFlo VST, which Pentair describes as a drop-in replacement for existing WhisperFlo pumps — and a variable-speed pump is the outcome the DOE rule was designed to produce. The same thing happened at Jandy, where the FloPro's top half was discontinued outright and the brochure now prints those models under a heading reading "Not DOE Compliant."
None of which affects a WFE that is running. Parts are still listed for the whole ladder, and the sections below apply to every one of them.
Order the right color
This is the one that catches people out, and it is peculiar to this pump.
Pentair built the WhisperFlo in almond and black, and the two are not just paint. The volute, the seal plate gasket, the cover o-ring, the mounting foot and the drain plug knobs all carry different part numbers by color.
Order the almond gasket for a black pump and it will not be the right part. Check the color of the piece you are replacing, not the color of the pump overall, because pads that have been repaired before often carry a mix.
Older pumps in this range add a second trap: the cover, its o-ring and the seal plate gasket were all changed at some point, so a pump from the earlier generation takes 070795, 071422 and 071445 where a newer one takes 357151, 350013 and 357100.
If you are choosing rather than repairing
A single-speed high-head pump is an expensive thing to run, because head is exactly what makes a pump work hard — and above 1.1 total horsepower, the single-speed option in this family no longer exists.
Pentair's current variable-speed equivalent is the WhisperFlo VST at 2.6 total horsepower and a WEF of 8.4, and on a genuinely high-head system a variable-speed pump is the better answer for the same reason it is elsewhere — running slower for longer costs a fraction of running flat out for a few hours.
Before replacing like for like, it is worth working out the flow you actually need. A high-head pump fitted to a pool that never needed one is a bill that arrives every month.
Which model do you have?
The model number is on the pump label. Everything else in the range is shared — these are the parts that change with it.

Pentair WhisperFlo parts, and what goes wrong
Read off the manufacturer’s parts list and checked before it ships. Open a row for what a bad one actually does — or start from the symptom and work down, which is the cheaper order.
What is it doing?
Two of them, below the water line, and easy to leave loose after winterizing. Worth knowing that this is the same part Pentair uses on the IntelliFlo3 — if you have both pumps on one pad, one bag of o-rings covers them.

The first thing to check on a WhisperFlo that will not hold prime. It hardens and flattens with heat and chemicals until it stops sealing, and the pump draws air past it instead of water. Older pumps take 071422 instead, so check which cover you have before ordering.

Sits between the volute and the seal plate, so a leak here shows as water under the middle of the pump rather than at either end. This is the black version — almond pumps take 357102, and older ones use the 071445 o-ring instead.

A cracked basket is not obviously broken until you hold it to the light. What it does is downstream: debris that should have stopped here reaches the impeller and the diffuser instead, so you end up diagnosing weak flow when the cause is a basket.

The PA-7 seal with its ceramic seat. When it fails you get water weeping from between the pump body and the motor, running straight down onto the bearings. Act on the first drip — the seal is cheap and the motor it destroys is not.

The clear lid crazes with UV long before it cracks, and a lid you cannot see through is a basket you never check. Older pumps take 070795.

If you are doing the job anyway
Pentair sells two of these as kits precisely because nobody splits a WhisperFlo for one seal. Both are listed on the parts sheet.
Seal plate kit
The shaft seal arrives already fitted to the plate with its gasket, which removes the fiddliest part of the job — seating a mechanical seal squarely. Almond is 350202.
- Shaft seal071734S
- Seal plate gasket357100
Sold as a kit: 350101 (black) / 350202 (almond)
Volute and seal plate kit
The full wet end: clamp, cover, o-ring, basket, gasket, volute, seal, seal plate and both drain plugs. Worth it on a pump that has been apart more than once.
- Lid o-ring350013
- Strainer basket070387
- Shaft seal071734S
- Seal plate gasket357100
- Drain plug o-ring192115
Sold as a kit: 357149 (almond)
The no-prime seals
The two suction-side o-rings behind most lost-prime calls. A few dollars together and ten minutes of work.

Pentair WhisperFlo warranty
1 year parts
One year. Pentair's warranty page puts single-speed pumps and booster pumps at that term, which is the shortest in its pump range and half what the variable-speed WhisperFlo VST gets. Where you buy decides the labor rather than the term: a standard purchase carries parts and labor, an e-commerce purchase is parts only, and Pentair's warranty page states directly that labor is not covered for internet purchases. Coverage begins on the date of installation, not purchase, and consumables — o-rings, seals, gaskets, strainer baskets and pump mechanical seals among them — carry one year of parts and labor regardless of any longer term above them.
