Above-ground pools

Before you buy Intex

Check the recall before anything else

Intex is recalling, with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, certain above-ground pools 48 inches and taller whose compression strap runs around the outside of the vertical legs. The strap can give a child a foothold into the pool, which is a drowning hazard rather than a structural one.

The covered set is specific: 48- and 52-inch Metal Frame and Ultra Frame pools sold before 2013, plus 48-inch Prism Frame and Ultra XTR Frame pools sold online by Intex in 2024 and 2025, at Walmart between 15 February and 11 March 2025, and in 2026 through certain liquidation stores in Texas and West Virginia or on eBay.

Not covered: pools sold after 2013 whose straps are sleeved on the inside of the legs, and any pool under 48 inches. The remedy is a free repair kit — a rope that ties to each vertical leg at ground level and does the strap's job. Intex's Identify Your Model check settles it by model number, and its recall line is 1-800-549-8829.

One warranty, several different terms inside it

Intex warrants by component rather than by product, which is why a single pool set carries four different periods. On an Ultra XTR set: two years on the liner and frame, two years on the sand filter pump, 180 days on the pump's hoses, plunger valves and fittings, and one year on the ladder.

Claims go to an Intex service center, not the store where you bought it, for the original purchaser with proof of purchase. Two exclusions do most of the work in practice: letting water freeze in the sand filter voids its warranty outright, and the pool warranty excludes punctures, tears, abrasions and ordinary wear along with freeze, flood and rain damage. That makes winterizing a warranty matter rather than a preference.

Intex documents are keyed by manual number rather than product name — 118PO is the Ultra XTR pool, 342PO the sand filter pump, 331PO the ladder, 201 the repair kit — and they are served from Intex's support site by filename. The number is what to search for when a product page does not link the document you need.
